Useful information,
The tobacco worm - a small pest with a significant impact
The tobacco beetle (Lasioda Serricorne) is undoubtedly one of the most feared pests in the tobacco industry. In particular, the tobacco worm larva, which emerges from this beetle, causes great concern worldwide for cigar lovers. Lasioderma Serricorne feeds primarily on tobacco products and has a preference for laying its eggs in cigars and other tobacco products. These products are often sent all over the world together with the tobacco and can cause considerable damage even in the humidors of customers. A cigar infected by tobacco worms can no longer be saved. Therefore, this pest leads to considerable losses every year. Many cigar retailers had to say goodbye to their esteemed collector's pieces, which fell victim to the larvae of the tobacco beetle.
In the production phase, manufacturers already use various measures to minimize worm -related damage. These include smoke chambers, sophisticated pheromon and UV light traps as well as pesticides such as hydrogen phosphorus. Nevertheless, it occurs occasionally that the eggs survive in the cigars. The humidors preferred by cigar lovers in particular offer the larvae the ideal environment to hatch due to their warm, warm climate, especially if they are not handled properly. Cigars should never be stored at temperatures above 24 ° C, since too high temperatures not only create ideal conditions for the tobacco worm, but also promote mold growth. The recommended temperature in the humidor is between 18 and 21 ° C, with a humidity of around 70 percent.
What to do with a tobacco rabbit case?
A tobacco rabbits in a cigar is shown by small holes in the cover sheet and possibly through increased cigar dust. In such a case, the infected cigar should be disposed of immediately because it is no longer edible. This serves to prevent the spread of infestation to other cigars. If it is not traded fast enough, there is a risk that all cigars will be infected in humidor.
It is advisable to take all cigars out of the humidor in a worm case and check for possible traces of infestation. After the infected cigars have been sorted out and the humidor has been thoroughly cleaned, the other cigars can normally be covered. This step helps to minimize the risk of transmission of the worm to other cigars.
For additional security, unavoidable cigars can be placed in a well -sealed plastic bag in the freezer for three days. Many cigar dealers use this method for prevention of worm infestation. After the freezing cool, however, the cigars should not be thawed at room temperature, since too quickly thawing can lead to damage in the cover page. Instead, a slow thawing is recommended in the fridge. However, it is not advisable to permanently store cigars in the fridge, since the low humidity can damage the cigars in the long term and the ripening process is disturbed at the cool temperatures of the fridge.
To prevent major damage, it is important to regularly check the cigars stored in the humidor and ensure that the correct storage conditions are observed. This helps to recognize and prevent a tobacco rabbar case early.
A temperature of 18 ° - 20 ° degrees is ideal for storage. The relative humidity of 60 - 80% makes the cigars stored perfectly for a long time.
How does the temperature influence the maturation of a cigar?
When a cigar is stored open and in fresh air, the ammonia nodes fly away after a few months, and after 2-3 years the cigar can lose aroma. The bouquet practically evaporates in the ambient air. A humidor is used to avoid this.
However, it is not the temperature, but the amount of fresh air and the relative humidity are the decisive factors. The temperature plays a subordinate role and mainly serves to calculate the relative humidity. We therefore recommend that you store cigars in your original packaging such as boxes, cellophan or tubos. Open storage is possible and is also practiced in cigar transactions, but these cigars should then be smoked promptly. For longer storage times, i.e. over 1 year, storage in boxes, cellophan or tubos is recommended.
Answer to the above question: higher temperatures are unproblematic as long as they do not occur suddenly. The relative humidity remains stable. An abrupt increase in temperature, such as by placing a humidor in direct sunlight, can increase the temperature from about 20 ° C to over 50 ° C. In summer, humidity should be reduced to about 65% to prevent the cigar from becoming too soft.
For the purchase of cigar cooling cabinets, i.e. humidors with temperature control, this means that such devices have all the factors well under control.
These cigar cooler cabinets are the best that can be done to your cigars.
